Conscious Leadership Transformation

What is the mind?  Vibrating consciousness.

The organizational values of individuals have energetic resonance

to create the future.

Consciousness creates matter.   Gita Bellin

My husband and I have been married for twenty-seven years. Like many long term relationships we have had our ups and downs. During some of the challenging times, our different beliefs and values created conflict and a feeling of separation, driving a wedge in the love and connection we felt for each other. Particularly challenging conversations for us were about politics, where our opinions seemed to be polar opposites. We’d end up in conflict, with raw emotions and hurt feelings because we could not agree with each other and there was no sense of togetherness on the topic.

Have you ever had this feeling in a relationship close to you?

One day I was teaching a yoga class, feeling very grounded on my mat on the hardwood floor, calm and centered as I spoke. The theme for the day was “Skill in Action,” how valuable it was to apply the skills you learn in life to all aspects of living. As I was teaching the lesson a realization began to dawn in me. Why not use all your training in human dynamics and communication to solve my own relationship problems. There was a chuckle inside my head as I heard myself laughing at how self-centered I’d been. It’s one thing to teach the knowledge and another to really live it.

From that day forward I became more aware of the motivational values of people around me and what made them tick. I did a lot of soul searching on my own values. I discovered one of my top values is commitment. By living this value more authentically I recognized how much more satisfying it was to feel committed and live the value of commitment in our relationship, than it was to focus on our differences. Our different beliefs were not going to change any time soon, and, quite possibly, they exist to spark growth in each other. However, what did change as a result of the shift in mindset and focus to accepting my husband’s values and who he was, was a new outlook that has made our relationship happier and more joyful.

As we develop conscious awareness of our own values, this helps us to become more conscious for the values of others, especially those we lead. One way to increase your consciousness about values is to have a conversation.

Ask people to name one of their top values:

  • Why this value is important to them?
  • What they do to live this value?
  • What is the impact living this value has on their performance at work?
  • How would they feel if this value is stepped on or ignored?

During this conversation you will see their life force come alive, their demeanor shift, their facial features lift and brighten, and their tone of voice have more energy and life.

Conscious leadership transformation is internal.  It’s a shift that happens on the inside which impacts our behaviour.  This is why leaders must be the first to transform when leading change. They need to be the change and role model for others to follow.

It all starts by becoming more conscious and aware of who you are, and the values that define you.  When you do, you have discovered a source of life force energy that connects to your soul, and source of joy and happiness.

Much love from Singapore,

Joanna

3 Steps to a Successful Strategy Implementation

Everyone knows workplace culture is important. In many cases, a company’s culture is more important than its strategy or operating model . A few years ago, a consulting company in Singapore did a study with 200 companies. Their results showed 9 out of 10 strategic initiatives failed because leaders didn’t focus on changing people’s behaviours and how they worked together.

Do you have new business requirements and strategies that will require different behaviours and a shift in corporate culture? Unless you focus on changing how people work together how can you expect different results? Einstein said that doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results is… insanity.

If Einstein was at your workplace, he might say “Leading, managing and behaving in the same old ways while expecting your employees to embrace new work habits and higher levels of collaboration is cultural insanity.”

In your annual planning sessions, do you see strategies coming back… year-after-year because your organization didn’t implement them successfully? One reason might be because your current culture, the way people are working today, is out of alignment with the strategies you’re trying to implement.
May I help you increase your strategy implementation success?

It’s as easy as 1…2…3…

Step 1

Identify all the stakeholders who are impacted by the strategies you wish to implement. A stakeholder is any person or group who has an interest in your success.

Step 2
Conduct an environmental scan with your key stakeholders and identify the drivers for change. They are the impetus and motivation for change, providing the change effort’s relevance and meaning. Drivers are the purpose for those leading the change as well as those who are going to be affected by the change. People need to understand and accept the compelling reasons for change before they will commit to changing their behaviours.

Worksheet – Compelling Reasons for Change
Purpose: To build commitment for cultural transformation by conducting an environmental scan and identifying the compelling reasons for change.

Stakeholder Analysis & Environment Scan

Stakeholder analysis:
Who are our stakeholders?
What do they need from us?
How do we serve them?
External business environment:
What changes are affecting our organization and generating new business imperatives?
Internal business environment
How do we constantly learn from our experiences and daily operations?
How do team members bring themselves fully to work?
Organizational and social structures:
How do we develop clarity on team objectives between all stakeholders?
How does the team best organize itself to deliver on priorities?
The forces that hold the team together:
What is the level of trust on the team? Using the Trust Matrix below, plot five areas of strength and five areas that need developing.
What would motivate team members to give more to this team versus other teams?

Trust Matrix

Step 3

The most challenging struggles identified in the drivers for change deal with leaders’ and team members’ behaviours and mindset. They need to develop awareness, ownership, and responsibility for the internal drivers of change such as personal behaviors and values. This is because organizations do not change: it is the people in them that do. For sustained success and real change to happen, the change must begin at the base, in the mindset and values of leaders and staff. When mindsets change, new thinking and strategies emerge, making new behaviors possible, sparking a rippling effect up the drivers of change.

From Fear to Trust

Everyone wants joy and happiness, but few realize that mental, physical and emotional well-being are the foundation to them all.

Each of us has the power to make choices to be our most joyful, loving and creative selves. So what holds us back from making positive choices to realize our full potential?
Our fears.
Fears of not having enough. Fears of not being loved enough. Or fears of not being good enough.

As leaders in our fast changing world, we need the skills to be able to face our fears, learn and adapt to change, constantly. The most successful individuals and companies are the ones who are able to adapt to change quickly. What prevents learning and growth are our fears. The biggest one is the overriding need for safety and security.

Here is some wisdom from Abraham Maslow:
“… Growth forward is made possible by the feeling of being safe, operating out into the unknown from a safe home port, of daring because retreat is possible… Assured safety permits higher needs and impulses to emerge and to grow towards mastery… In the choice between giving up safety or giving up growth, safety will win out.”
What Maslow is saying is fear holds us back, and trust enables us to grow.
Whenever we encounter a new situation, we need to have the confidence and trust in our abilities and our organization, to cope with the challenges and support us. It takes courage to grow, and trust in our environment to overcome the fears we may be feeling.
  • What factors in your environment are helping you build the confidence needed for a growth mind-set?
  • How are you enabling your people to embrace change with confidence in their abilities?
  • What is leadership doing to build a safe and secure workplace that will support you if you fail?
Having a growth mind-set enables us to learn and adapt to change. It must be supported by the right workplace culture and leadership. A workplace culture that encourages creativity and failure. This is because innovation entails trial and error. With a leadership style that builds trust and trustworthiness, that values you and your abilities.
Here is a team building tool to help you build greater awareness for the issues surrounding trust on your team.
The Trust Matrix (Graphic 5.3) and Trust Matrix worksheet (Worksheet 12-1) or pages 83 and 222 from my book, Conscious Culture.
How can you overcome your fears?
• Have confidence in your abilities.
• Have the courage to know you are safe and secure
• Trust yourself and others (this can be a biggie!)
Using the Trust Matrix Worksheet as a team building process empowers teams members to move from fear to trust.  It creates a safe environment for dialogue where individuals can share the  team’s strengths, and those areas where improvements can be made.
Joy and happiness are your birth-right. We mustn’t let our fears hold us back from experiencing the best this life has to offer.
Much love from Singapore

All you need is love

Christmas 2Tis the season, isn’t it? That time of year where the spirit of Christmas fills your heart with love and we feel that warm glow of joy, happiness and peace.

What if we could bottle this feeling of love and connection, and share it the whole year? Imagine what life would be like.

“All you need is love”.

These words made famous by The Beatles 30+ years ago, still hold true today.  Positive energy and inspirational leadership come from the heart. This feeling of happiness we experience at Christmas, the human connections we make, to me, this is the human spirit that makes all things possible.

Song-All-You-Need-Is-Love-300x295

Everyone wants to experience love, joy and happiness in life and at work, but few realize our own level of happiness, the quality of our relationships and amount of connection we have to others, are the foundation to them all.

At Christmas, our loving spirit awakens to who we are, and the importance of our inner nature. Mind, body and spirit are integrated to promote our desire for good health, fulfilling relationships, and inner peace.

My wish this Christmas is for you to bottle that loving feeling you have and keep it close to your heart. Use it as a reminder of what is possible the throughout whole year.

With love from Singapore,

Joanna

My new year’s gift to you for 2017 is:

Art of Happiness Program   – – Learn how to bring happiness and inspiration into your life everyday!

Art of Workplace Happiness – Awakening the “Heart” of Leadership Potential

happiness and joy in workplace cultureArt of Workplace Happiness
Awakening the “Heart” of Leadership Potential

In 2015, Singapore conducted a National Happiness Survey. The survey shows the link between happiness and culture. When leaders invest in creating a culture that is engaging and aligned with the values of their employees, profitability increases. Employees are more satisfied and high performing.

When leaders create a conscious culture of happiness and participation that is aligned with the values of their employees, profitability increases through greater employee satisfaction and performance. Healthy workplaces create happy employees who are less stressed, more focused and creative, and as a result more productive.

There is a growing need for new-thinking and conscious leadership to lead transformation with increased levels of employee participation and engagement. Plans, strategies and structures represent only the ÔÇ£tip of the icebergÔÇØ in terms of leading innovation. It is the collective habits, attitudes and beliefs of the leaders and employees ÔÇô YOUR workplace culture ÔÇô that can make or break new initiatives.

In this workshop, Joanna Barclay shares 3 decades of facilitating successful leadership teams resulting in high performing, values-driven organisations. With her ABCs of High Performance, she provides a blueprint for awakening leadership potential that fuels happy, high performing, values-driven organisations.

Celebrating World Values Day – October 20, 2016

World Value day 2016

World Value day 2016

What inspired my husband and I to move half way around the world, from Canada to Southeast Asia?

Our values of family and making a difference.

What gives us the energy to face the challenges a move like this presents?

Our values of commitment and shared vision.

Where do we find joy and happiness in our new life?

In the fulfilment of living our values.

Each day is filled with joy and happiness, renewing our energy on this incredible adventure of a life time. They also gave us the courage to make this incredible change.

This is the power of living your values.

The joy, happiness, and sense of fulfilment that comes from living your life’s purpose.

Our values are the language of the heart that give a positive mental attitude. They are the calling of our soul to your reason for being. When you are in tune with your soul’s purpose, you live in a state of flow. Creativity and synchronicity abound.

To read an amazing book that has just been released on this subject, I highly recommend:

A New Psychology of Human Well-Being
An Exploration of the Influence of Ego-Soul Dynamics on Mental and Physical Health by Richard Barrett.

Values are what make us who we are. Values are the things that are important to us. Being aware of our values and putting them into action each and every day, makes a positive impact on our lives and the world in which we live.

In support of World Values Day, 20 October 2016, we at Culture Leadership Group would like to invite you to think about your most deeply held values and to act on them.

You can participate in World Values Day in a very simple way:

1. Take the World Values Day Personal Values Assessment to connect with your values.
You will receive an 8 page report with an exercise that will give you questions to work with.

2. Invite your team members, family, and friends to do the same.

3. Share the results with each other, and be amazed at the deep sense of connection that is developed.

4. Take a photo showing you and your value.

5. Share it on Social Media using the hashtag #WorldValuesDay.

To learn more about the World Values Day, visit the World Values Day website.

Thank you for doing your part in creating a values-driven society!

With Love,

Joanna.
